Chapter 24

Pulling out a small envelope, Mateo handed it over. Giving Mateo a long look, the commander picked up the envelope Mateo had placed down on his desk and flicked his finger, causing a bit of silver energy to tear through it. With a casual flick, the commander pulled the folded letter free and opened it up, his eyes flicking back and forth as he read over it.

Finding himself surprisingly nervous, Mateo tried to keep his hands from straying toward his belt, where he had hidden three small packages, each containing a bit of the powder Teller had made for him. There was always the possibility the commander would decide he didn’t need Mateo once he had the letter. And if he did decide to attack, this powder was Mateo’s best chance of making it out alive. The commander didn’t seem to rate Mateo that highly, and after reading over the letter, he tossed it to the desk and nodded.

“Fine, let’s get this Torfal out of prison and have a chat.”

Picking up a small bell from his desk, he rang it. The door quickly opened and a soldier rushed in.

“There’s a man in prison here. Goes by the name Torfal, a merchant of some kind. I want to see him.”

“Yes, sir.”

After the soldier had rushed off, Commander Perel read the letter again and then stood up.

“Tell me, are you really a spy for the Empire?”

“No, sir, I’m not.”

“Isn’t that something a spy would say though?” the commander said, amused by his own witticism. “They must start training you awfully young. You’re barely a teenager.”

“Fifteen, sir.”

“Fifteen. Well, maybe you’re not as young as I thought. You’re a smart kid though. I wonder if you’d be interested in following me. I’m sure I could negotiate with the Empire to have them place you by my side. I could use someone with a brain like yours.”

Seeing that Commander Perel didn’t believe his denial, Mateo could only sigh helplessly.

“I’m sorry, sir. I really am not a spy for the Empire.”

That was only a half-truth. Mateo wasn’t technically a full member of Dark Wing, as he was still in his training period. At the same time, he had been acting as a full member for the last few months, ever since being assigned to work with Torfal and Kel.

“Then it should be even easier, right?” Commander Perel said with a grin. “If you’re not attached to the Empire as a spy, then it should be simple enough for you to pick up and come with me. I can offer you all sorts of benefits. And believe me when I say that being an inspector in Gratian’s military is not my peak.”

“Thank you for your kind intentions, sir. But I’m not currently looking for employment.”

Seeing the look in the commander’s eyes harden, Mateo bowed slightly, an apologetic look on his face, using the motion as cover to get his hands closer to his belt. Thankfully, before the situation could deteriorate, the door opened and the soldier who had rushed off earlier entered, Torfal behind him.
